Upcoming Netflix Releases I Can’t Wait For

After the impressive and successful likes of Wednesday, Stranger Things Volume 4, Heartstopper, First Kill (anyone else gutted about it being cancelled?) and The Midnight Club, I’m so excited to see what’s to come for Netflix this year. This week I thought I’d compile some of the upcoming shows I’m looking forward to the most!

1. Pamela, A Love Story

Following on from the questionable Disney+ show, Pam + Tommy, Pamela Anderson has taken back her own story and will be releasing a tell-all docuseries at the end of this month. I must admit, I did watch a few episodes of Pam + Tommy earlier this year but never felt I could morally stick to it following Anderson’s comments on the miniseries.

In March of last year Pamela made her Instagram debut with a note to fans, hinting at her upcoming work with Netflix;

It reads; ‘My life, a thousand imperfections, a million misconceptions, wicked, wild, lost and nothing to live up to – I can only surprise you – not a victim, but a survivor and alive to tell the real story’.

We, and the media, no longer need to assume the full story or make unnecessary speculation about Anderson’s life, as the true story will now come from the star herself. I’m sure this will be a moving and empowering documentation of Pamela’s life in which she can reclaim her own image and share her story with the world.

2. Heartstopper, S2

I don’t think I have ever been obsessed with a TV show more in my life. Season 1 of Heartstopper was everything an LGBTQIA+ show should be; warm, charming, effortless and so incredibly relevant to the everyday lives of the young queer community.

For anyone who hasn’t watched the first season yet, Heartstopper is based on a comic by Alice Oseman and follows the story of a teenage Charlie who develops a crush on the school’s popular kid; Nick. Surrounded by friends, who are also within the LGBTQIA+ community, the pair form a heart-warming romance whilst dealing with other issues that come with being teenagers.

With production still underway, not much has been confirmed about the second season, but Oseman has confirmed some relevant themes of the comic will be included. We can expect to see more conversations about mental health as well as a a range of new characters, including TikTok star Bel Priestley as Ellie’s friend Naomi.

Bring on season two!!

Release date: TBC, most likely late 2023

3. Your Place or Mine

Image: Netflix

I know I’m mostly covering TV shows here, but something about this movie caught my eye and now I can’t wait. It stars Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher two long-time best friends, Debbie and Peter, as they navigate the frustrations of adult life whilst living on two different sides of the US. In an attempt to clear their heads, they swap homes for a week. Debbie goes to New York and Peter to Los Angeles. It’s very much giving me non-Christmassy The Holiday vibes.

As they spend time living in each other’s worlds, Peter (rather cliche-ly) reveals his true feelings for his best friend Debbie, which sends the film into a new direction. Deep down, aren’t we all suckers for some cheesey romance?

It also features a cameo from the beloved Greys Anatomy star, Jessie Williams. Watch the trailer here:

Release Date: Feb 10th

4. You, S4

Image: Netflix

The eerie and villainous protagonist, Joe Goldberg, will return to Netflix in early February. I have watched this show religiously since season 1 came out, highly anticipating each season as it came out. The show follows Joe as he stalks and thereby falls in love with a new woman each season, whilst trying to hide his murderous and obsessive tendencies. Season 3 was certainly a show-stopper for me, featuring The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Victoria Pedretti. The complexities of their marriage bring forth incredible plot twists that even a crime fanatic wouldn’t see coming.

Season 4 brings us from California all the way to London, where Joe meets a plethora of new faces. He becomes a professor we see his urge for sadistic behaviour come crawling back. In this new season, it seems that everyone is a suspect for murder, forcing Joe to navigate a world in which perhaps he is not the only villain.

Release Date: Part 1 on Feb 9th, Part 2 on March 10th

5. Sex Education, S4

Image: Netflix

The one word to describe this show is iconic. It’s so refreshing, relevant and a moving commentary on teenage life, particularly in the UK. The show follows the lives of students at Moordale Secondary School as they navigate through life. As per the title, most of their dilemmas surround sexual intimacy and health. In season one, we see lead character Otis (Asa Butterfield) set up an anonymous sex advice clinic within the school. Gradually throughout the previous seasons, the characters unravel and we learn more about their personal issues. This show covers such important topics that are not only glossed over in other tv shows and films, but also in schools in real life.

Despite its incredible Britishness, Sex Education borrows traditions from American schools to appeal to a wider audience. So, there’s a little bit of something for everyone! Also, as a major Schitt’s Creek fan, I’m also so excited about Dan Levy appearance in the upcoming season.

Release Date: TBC, most likely mid-late 2023

I can’t wait to see what the rest of 2023 has in store for us on Netflix, and across other streaming platforms! What are you most excited for? Let me know below!
