Plastic Free July is an annual movement that aims to encourage people to, you guessed it, use less or use no plastic at all in July. It’s a great way to start thinking about how much plastic we actually use and what we could swap out in our daily lives. Whether it’s plastic bottles or bags, there are great alternatives. We’ll get into the tote bags, but first things first, let’s talk stats.
Earth Day broke down single use plastic statistics in 2022, here are some of the key stats;
- Approximately 91% of plastic is not recycled
- Humans use 1.2 million plastic water bottles per minute
- An estimate 5 trillion plastic bags are produced annually – worldwide!
- It can take up to 1,000 years for a single plastic bag to disintegrate
- At least 4 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean every year
So, what can we do to help?
It is, of course, largely at the hands of big companies causing damage to the environment. However, there are small steps we can take to reduce our own plastic consumption.
Today, we’re sharing some of our favourite tote bags we have found on Etsy! Tote bags are a great alternative to plastic bags. I always carry one with me wherever I go to avoid having to buy plastic bags. Plus, it’s a great bonus to have a cute pattern or funky design!
Many retailers now sell tote bags, but let’s take this opportunity to celebrate independent small businesses!
