Wow, another month has flown by! We’re back again with the ‘What I watched in‘ series – it’s April already! I spent much of this month binge-watching new tv shows, so this list is a little shorter than usual! From new terrifying horror movies to insane time travel – let’s get into this!

Smile

Smile, Paramount Pictures, 2022

As a huuuuge horror fan, I can’t begin to tell you how excited I was to watch this movie. Smile is centred around a therapist, Rose, who witnesses an eerie and incredibly creepy suicide of a patient. Rose then starts seeing some disturbing hallucinations that just get darker and darker. This is truly one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in a long time. I was on the edge of my seat and was genuinely left terrified. For horror fans looking for a thrill, I’d 100% recommend Smile.

Yellow Jackets

Yellow Jackets, Entertainment One, 2021 – Present

I saw clips of Yellow Jackets popping up all over my TikTok for you page and I’m so glad I gave it a chance. The show starts by introducing us to a high-school soccer team who, in a turn of events, end up in a plane crash. In order to survive in the wilderness, they turn to some dark and twisted ways to stay alive. Yellow Jackets time jumps between their lives in the wilderness and the survivors as adults. The plot only really starts to unravel in season 2, but it’s incredibly gripping from the get-go and a must-watch!

La Brea

La Brea, ABC, 2021 – Present

After a massive sinkhole opens in Los Angeles, a family is separated between two worlds – present day and 10,000 BC. The group who find themselves in the past are fighitng to find a way back home, whilst encountering pre-historic animals and discovering strange cirumstances. Shoutout to my mum for getting me hooked on this show! The concept is brilliant, but the acting does let it down a little. New episodes are released every Thursday, with season 1 and half of season 2 out already.

Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now

Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now, Netflix, 2023

Netflix has been releasing a lot of celebrity documentaries in the last few years and most recently dropped Lewis Capaldi’s How I’m Feeling Now. I started watching it with minimal expectations, and I was genuinely moved to tears. Like many people, I was expecting a lot of humour but was surprised by the level of personal detail and emotion from Capaldi. It’s an incredible insight into his life and his journey with Tourette’s Syndrome. This is a huge recommendation from me – particularly for people who are into pop culture.

Station 19

Station 19, ABC, 2018 – Present

As an OG Grey’s Anatomy fan, I can’t believe it took me this long to start watching Station 19. Station 19 centres around Ben Warren, an ex-surgeon from Grey’s Anatomy, as he enters his new career as a firefighter. Literally imagine the drama, the cases, etc. you see in Grey’s Anatomy but it’s firefighters! I am genuinely obsessed – I’ve still got a few more season to watch and I can’t wait to keep bingeing.

Catfish UK

Catfish UK, MTV, 2021 – Present

I’ve been a fan of Catfish US for longer than I can remember and I’m so glad there’s a UK version. For those who don’t know, the premise of Catfish is essentially a team of people who help people who think they’ve fallen victim to catfishes – people who fake an identity online and make people fall for a fake persona, often asking for money. Each episode is fascinating to me, mostly because I think I’d have the skills to solve these catfish cases in minutes. For some lighthearted MTV reality, Catfish UK (and US!) is perfect.

Wellmania

Wellmania, Netflix, 2023

I started watching this thinking it would just be a lighthearted comedy to run in the background of my mundane tasks. But, boy, did it exceed my expectations. Wellmania centres around Liv who throws herself into a wellness journey after a health scare and things just keep going wrong. As the story develops, we learn more about Liv’s vulnerabilites and insecurities, making her an incredibly relatable character. Wellmania is a true reflection of reality for a lot of us.

The Rookie

The Rookie, ABC, 2018 – Present

And last but not least, the current show I’m binge-watching – The Rookie. After lead character, John Nolan, has a near-death experience, he reasses his life and becomes a police officer. Again, I feel like I’m watching another Grey’s AnatomyStation 19 variant of public sector and emergency services jobs. I just find these types of shows so fascinating and couldn’t recommend The Rookie enough so far.
