Each year, we all look forward to the Met Gala, held in New York City on the first Monday in May. Of course, we can’t wait to see if our favourite celebrities show up, but we’re always way more keen to see what they are wearing. And with each year, there’s a theme. This year’s display was ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion‘, with a Garden of Time themed dress code. All of this year’s best dressed celebrities either absolutely hit the nail on the head, or they surprised us in unexpected ways.
Lana Del Rey
Lana’s Met Gala look is a custom design by Alexander McQueen’s Seán McGirr. Pulling from a fall 2006 McQueen archive, they were aiming for a more sinister mother nature look. Lana absolutely ate up this look and this has quickly become the internet’s favourite outfit.
Emma Chamberlain
From YouTube fame to Met Gala carpets, Emma Chamberlain is the powerhouse of making that influencer to celebrity crossover. This might be our favourite look of hers yet. Putting a goth spin on the nature theme, highlighting the dark underbelly of nature.
Eddie Redmayne
When we first saw Eddie’s look on it’s own, we were already obsessed with how out there he went in comparison to most other male attendees. But then, when we saw how it was incorporated with his wife’s dress we became even more obsessed. Smashed it!
Camila Cabello
In a super unique interpretation of the Met Gala’s theme, Camila wore an artfully distressed dress and carried a clutch that was literally made of ice. The idea behind the look was the impermanence of time and the beauty of things slowly decaying.
Elle Fanning
Elle Fanning’s look is all the internet has been talking about for the last few days. The radiant transparent Balmain gown was made to look like she was sculpted out of ice. Elle famously played Aurora in Maleficent, so we expected nothing less from her with a Sleeping Beauty theme.
Mike Faist
The internet has been loving Mike’s Met Gala look, adorably paired with a turnip on the lapel of his suit. Most men tend to go quite boring, in a suit and tie, but Mike added a little extra touch that we are obsessed with.
Tyla
For Tyla’s first Met Gala, she really blew everyone away and set the bar so high. Transforming into a sand sculpture and really latching onto the ‘time’ of the Garden of Time dress code, this may be the best look from the whole night.
Greta Lee
This was Greta’s first year at the Met Gala, and she absolutely smashed it. This look is so elegant, yet the neckline makes the look so unique. The concept was a juxtaposition of both the softness and strength of femininity.
Sydney Sweeney
Squint and that’s basically Billie Eilish, right? Sydney debuted a black bob (don’t worry, it’s a wig) on the Met Gala red carpet. The look is very much giving a combination of Cinderella and Snow White, perhaps emphasising on the princess aspect of the theme.
Gigi Hadid
Gigi’s off the shoulder corset dress trickled down into a blazer on the bottom half, which then formed the floor of the dress. Wanting to make this an incredible look, a team of 70 spent 13,500 hours creating this look. After the main event, she stripped off the bottom half for a more subtle glam look.
Ariana Grande
Ariana really brought ultimate glamour to the Met Gala carpet with this look. It’s simple, yet incredibly elegant. Ariana says its inspired by nature and how mother-of-pearl reflects light. Dubbing it as one of her favourite looks she’s ever worn, she said it also symbolises her new role as Wicked‘s Glinda.
Sabrina Carpenter
Sabrina has attended the Met Gala for a few years, always showcasing some incredible looks. This year, her and her boyfriend Barry Keoghan went full Alice in Wonderland. Fans also loved the new icy hair and slightly paler skin.
Doja Cat
For some, Doja Cat’s look wasn’t it, but if you understand it, then you’ll love it. The wet look is meant to represent female Greek statues you find in gardens. Her team achieved the look by drenching the dress in hair gel. It’s a really unique look in comparison to the amount of florals we saw this year.
