The minute the weather turns a little colder, it’s like that ‘la la la la la’ calling for us to come back. It’s time to head back to Stars Hollow and if you’re about to binge it for the first time, you’re in for a treat. We all know that Gilmore Girls is the fall TV show. Although the show spans over seven seasons, half of the episodes are set in fall. As a whole, Gilmore Girls has that cozy vibe that we all associate with the end of summer and beginning of fall. Trust us when we say it’s the perfect show to watch wrapped up in a soft blanket with a hot drink.

Gilmore Girls revolves around a single mother and her daughter who live a quiet life in the fictional town Stars Hollow, Connecticut. It shows their lives, relationships, and the challenges of their dynamic. Lorelai Gilmore, the mother, moved away from her wealthy parents. She raises her intelligent and ambitious daughter Rory, an aspiring journalist, in Stars Hollow. For small-town charm, romance, and non-stop laughter, it’s no wonder this show is still such a huge hit.

Heartstopper

Heartstopper, Netflix, 2022 – Present

With less than a month until season 3 drops on Netflix, Heartstopper is the perfect TV show to get you in that loved up fall spirit. Although the show is set year round, there are heavy fall themes throughout. While watching the series, you’ll notice illustrated autumn leaves often falling across the screen. Not only do these represent fall itself, but it also gives connotations of new love and how life can change so quickly.

Based on a graphic novel of the same name by Alice Oseman, Heartstopper follows the story of teens Nick and Charlie. They discover that their unlikely friendship could be something more, navigating the complexities of young love and school. The show quickly became iconic in the queer community. It gives us that wholesome young queer love we’ve never really seen before on television. Heartstopper has been praised for it’s diverse representation, positive messages, and showcasing the power of being yourself.

Charmed

Charmed, The WB, 1998 – 2006

Above all, this storyline being focused on three witches gives us all the fall vibes that we need. Despite taking place in San Francisco, Charmed seems to more often than not be set in the fall. We see a lot of cozy 2000s fall looks and a bunch of spooky spells to top it all off. Plus, there’s something about older TV shows that just make us feel so cozy. It’s perfect for this time of year.

Charmed follows a trio of sisters, also known as The Charmed Ones, and are the most powerful good witches of their time. The sisters, Piper, Prue, and Phoebe, all live together in a manor. They their powers to fight off demons, warlocks, and other supernatural forces. It has everything that we love about 2000s television and has left a legacy that inspired supernatural TV shows to come.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Netflix, 2018 – 2020

This slightly darker reimagination of Sabrina the Teenage Witch is yet another totally fall witch-themed series to binge this season. Costume director Angus Strathie says that he wanted to the series to feel like it was set in an ‘eternal autumn’. The seasons may change, but no matter what episode you’re watching, it’ll feel like fall. There is a uniquely vintage feel about this series, which only further adds to how ideal it is for this season.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina follows the life of Sabrina Spellman. Sabrina is a half-witch, half-mortal teenager approaching her sixteenth birthday. She deals with her dual identity and an impending big life decision, all while trying to be a normal teenager. This series is packed full of supernatural threats, moral dilemmas, and, above all, a girl figuring out where she fits in.

Virgin River

Virgin River, Netflix, 2019 – Present

For more small town vibes, Virgin River should be your go-to series this fall. It’s got such a warm and fuzzy feeling to it that’ll make you want to curl up under a blanket and binge watch all evening. Virgin River has the ultimate fall scenery, with charming characters and an overwhelming warm tone. It’s one to add to that watchlist ASAP.

This series follows Mel Monroe, a nurse practitioner who moves to the small town of Virgin River. She’s set on getting a fresh start following a tragedy, and seeks solace and a new purpose in this town. As Mel navigates through trauma and grief, she builds connections with the townsfolk, as well as some more dodgy characters. With season 6 coming late this year or early next year, you’ve got plenty of catching up to do.

Have you guys heard of Meg Ryan fall? Inspired by this movie, and other similar movies from the time, Meg Ryan accidentally started the ultimate fall fashion trend. Her iconic chunky boots and knitted jumper looks have become a blueprint. So, it’s only right that we talk about the movie that started it all, You’ve Got Mail.

This rom-com centres around Kathleen who owns an independent bookstore called The Shop Around the Corner. She meets Joe Fox, a wealthy owner of a large bookstore chain and he becomes a threat to her business. Unknowingly, they start to form an anonymous connection through email. The pair quickly develop a deep emotional connection, despite having a rivalry in the real world.

When Harry Met Sally…

When Harry Met Sally…, Columbia Pictures, 1989

This is the movie that should be on everyone’s fall watchlist. When Harry Met Sally is full of fall park scenery, with crunchy leaves, orange trees, and that Meg Ryan fall style. Plus, who doesn’t love a good rom-com to put them in a cozy mood? It’s truly a classic movie that will make you want to snuggle up and stay inside.

When Harry Met Sally is a rom-com that explores the complexities of friendship and love, all told through main characters Harry and Sally. Set in the 1970s, the pair share a car ride and offer their differing views on if men and women can just be friends. After bumping into each other a few more times, they become really good friends. However, the dynamic becomes complicated when they develop feelings for one another.

Sweet Home Alabama

Taking us back to rural life, this movie gives us that cozy yet unnerving feeling of being back in your small hometown. Shot mostly in Georgia and Alabama, this movie has some of the most breathtaking fall scenery for that cozy vibe. Despite not actually being set in fall, there’s something about the plot and the scenery that gives you that same feel.

This rom-com follows Melanie’s journey as a successful fashion designer who is about to marry a wealthy man. But, there’s one thing standing in her way. Melanie has to travel back home to finalise her divorce from her childhood sweetheart. As Melanie confronts past feelings, her old and new life slowly become intertwined. Sweet Home Alabama is full of Southern charm, intertwined with love, identity, and the stark contrast between urban and rural life.
