As more and more tv shows and films are being released, I’m trying to catch up with everything. I thought today I’d share some that I’ve watched this month. We talk through the chilling tale of Timothee Chalamet’s Bones and All all the way through to iconic sitcoms I should have watched a long time ago, like The Office. Oh, and we also cover the slightly disappointing yet highly anticipated M3GAN.
Bones and All
Let me start by saying that this one isn’t for the faint-hearted. If you’re grossed out easily, give this one a miss. I’d been meaning to watch this for a while and finally got round to it two weeks ago. The juxtaposition of a romance tale with a horrifying diet, so to speak, had me on the edge of my sit the whole time. Taylor Russell gives an incredible performance, making me want to watch more with her in. Without giving too much away, Bones and All is a perfect movie for gory horror lovers who also want a captivating story.

First Kill
I was a little late to the hype on this one. I’d been meaning to watch it since it came out and I’m so glad I finally did. This one is for all my fellow vampire lovers – I’m looking at you old Twilight and The Vampire Diaries lovers. With a fresh and beautiful tale of queer romance (what has been needed for a while, particularly between to girls), First Kill had me not wanting to stop watching. You know the kind of show where you immediately click ‘Play Next Episode’? Yeah, that’s this one. As many of you may know, this TV show wasn’t renewed for another season. It’s speculated that the same release time as Heartstopper, also a queer show, stunned it’s watch time.

Kim’s Convenience
Kim’s Convenience follows a Korean-Canadian family who run a store in downtown Toronto. The show is incredibly diverse and has a wonderful sense of humour. For me, this was the perfect show to binge. I swear, any free moment I had, you’d find me watching Kim’s Convenience. I’d seen clips here and there over the years and always thought it looked hilarious, I can’t believe I waited this long to watch it. I’m always a little gutted when I finish a TV show and know there won’t be any more episodes. This is one I could absolutely rewatch over and over.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin
I’m not exaggerating when I say that I was a huuuuge fan of the original Pretty Little Liars series as a teenager. 13-year-old me was hooked by the complex storylines, plot twists and, of course, the questionable relationships. I was, like most people, a little apprehensive about a reboot of such a classic. It’s always hit or miss with this things, but for me… this was a hit! Bailee Madison was a selling point for me, as I’ve always loved everything she’s in. The links between the mums in the 90s and the main characters now is fascinating, as you slowly begin to add them together to piece together a story.
Whilst it follows a similar theme to the original Pretty Little Liars, it feels like a stand-alone show. You don’t need to have seen the original to enjoy this series. It’s certainly darker, more twisted and graphic, but overall a brilliant watch.

Elvis
Again, I know I’m late to the game. Ever since hearing Doja Cat’s song for the movie, I’d been meaning to watch this. I mean, that was the selling point for many of us… right? Biopics are at a peak at the moment, with movies slowly coming out about just about every famous figure you could image. This movie, however, I’m not too sure about.
The way the film is edited is a little confusing. It makes it hard to follow the storyline, or really feel like there is one. I felt that I was just watching snapshots of Elvis’ story, but perhaps that was the intention. It’s definitely worth a watch for brilliant acting from Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, but not one I’d watch again.

The Office
I know, you’re all thinking ‘how have you never watched this before?’ Honestly I never thought it would be my thing. I’d seen a few clips here and there but wasn’t sold. A few weeks ago my boyfriend convinced me to give it a chance and, oh my god, I’m so glad I did. I’ve grown so attached to all of the characters and can finally understand the hype. Despite being incredibly hilarious, it also touches on some important subject matter in a light hearted way. My favourite characters are, of course, Jim and Pam although I do have a soft spot for Phyllis and Dwight. If you’ve never seen it, stop putting it off like I did. It’s the perfect sitcom, I guarantee you’ll love it.

The Perfect Man
Of course, I had to include a classic 2000s movie in this list. I was such a Hilary Duff fan back in the day and I can’t believe I’d never heard of this movie?? I found it scrolling through Netflix one day and, honestly, it’s one of the most heart-warming cheesy rom-coms I’ve watched in a while. It navigates the reality of being a single mother and the undying love between a family who just want the best for each other. If you’re a fan of the likes of old-school rom-coms like How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, Maid in Manhattan or When Harry Met Sally, this is the film for you.

The Girl From Plainville
As someone interested in true crime cases, I’m always intrigued by series based upon a real case. With a VPN, I was able to access Hulu and watch the show. I’d followed the Michelle Carter case loosely as it was happening and I believe The Girl From Plainville has done a great job representing it, as true crime series go. Elle Fanning does a brilliant job portraying Carter and I appreciated that a lot of the focus was also on Conrad’s story. We are not just focused on the defendant, but also the one who lost his life. I think it’s a respectable and eye-opening re-imagination of the case, but the storyline may be confusing for those who aren’t familiar with the case.

M3GAN
Guys, I’m being so serious when I say I’ve never left the cinema so confused and disappointed by a movie. M3GAN, the newest hype in the horror world, was pushed as the next best thing. Based on the trailer, I was so excited about this movie… but I left the cinema feeling disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, as a concept it’s brilliant. An AI creation that goes wrong is a telling tale of a real-world future, but it just wasn’t all it was hyped up to be. It’s advertised as a horror, but really isn’t anything of the sorts. It’s a little creepy and very clever, but didn’t cut it for me. We spent a lot of the time just laughing to ourselves, feeling a little mind-blown at what we were watching.
If you are a horror fan, I’d give this one a miss. However, if you like comments on technology and the future of AI, I think you’d really enjoy this.

That’s everything from me, maybe I’ll see you at the end of next month with another list. Have you watched any of these? What were your thoughts? I’m always looking for new things to watch. What have tv shows and movies have you watched so far this year? Let me know, I’ll check it out 🙂
with love,
