Last month, Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for its 20th season. To celebrate, we’re bringing you the ultimate Grey’s list of the most insane medical cases. From a boy trapped in cement to the patient with a bomb stuck inside him, let’s break this down.
The Boy Stuck In Cement
– s4 x e18 ‘Freedom, Part 1‘
In this episode, we are introduced to Andrew Langston, a patient who jumped into wet cement to try and impress his peers. Such rare circumstances cause the doctors to start arguing about where they should begin and what potential injuries to treat first. Not only is this episode medically fascinating, but we also learn valuable lessons about what true friendship really is.
Strangers Stuck on a Train Pole
– s2 x e6 ‘Into You Like a Train‘
This is definitely the most insane and memorable Grey’s Anatomy case. In season 2, there is a train crash which leads to two strangers being impaled by a pole. The doctors must then make the difficult decision of who to save. This episode tells an incredible tale of friendship and kindness between strangers. It’s a classic.
The Girl Who Feels No Pain
– s3 x e3 ‘Sometimes a Fantasy‘
In season 3, Alex Karev meets a young girl, Megan, who is covered in injuries, yet is claiming none of them hurt. Alex works with the patient and they compete in some pain-inducing exercises, forming an incredible bond. Megan is a self-described superhero with a groundbreaking case.
Bomb Stuck in a Patient
– s2 e16 ‘It’s the End of the World’
This episode as a whole was absolutely insane and arguably one of the best Grey’s episodes overall. Two friends set out to recreate events of World War 2 (weird behaviour in itself) and following a huge malfunction, one of them ends up being hit in the chest by a bazooka shell. Cut to the ambulance where, in a desperate bid to stop the bleeding, a paramedic puts her hands inside the patients chest. Once they arrived at the hospital, the realisation sets in that if she moves, the bomb explodes. This is genuinely one is the most intense Grey’s Anatomy episodes I’ve ever watched – and that’s saying a lot.
The Man With the Nails in his Head
– s1 x e4 ‘No Man’s Land‘
I bet you’re wondering what could possibly lead someone to such unusual circumstances, right? This patient tripped down the stairs whilst holding a nail gun and – you guessed it – accidentally fired seven nails into his brain. By some miracle, the patient survived his injuries but the doctors discovered a tumour during surgery. The tumour was located where his memory and personality are, meaning he would likely lose a huge part of that if they removed it. The patient decides to risk it – leaving his wife worried he’d forget all about her. This one is emotional, tense and groundbreaking – truly an iconic episode.
The Girl Who Could Hear Her Body
– s6 x e22 ‘Shiny Happy People’
Demi Lovato made an iconic guest appearance on Grey’s Anatomy in 2010. Lovato plays a patient whose medical issue is a complete mystery. After a patient is wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia, Alex works to find out what’s actually going on. Hayley is hearing continuous noises, overwhelming her and resulting in deep depression. Through testing and severe persistence, the patient is found to have a tiny hole in her ear. She wasn’t schizophrenic – she could hear everything inside her body.
The Man With a Tree in His Lung
– s7 x e21 ‘I Will Survive’
Remember as kids when we believed if we swallowed an apple pip a tree would grow inside us? This nightmare actually came true for this Grey’s patient. Raul enters the ER coughing up blood but was found to actually have a fur tree growing inside his lung – potentially a rare circumstance from inhaling a seed.
The Patient with Toxic Blood
– s3 x e14 – ‘Wishin’ and Hopin’ ‘
The doctors are working on a patient with cancer, only to find that they all start experiencing the same symptoms as her. Shortly after beginning her operation, each and every surgeon collapses. Could it be possible that something inside this patient was toxic? Later in the episode, they come to the conclusion that an unusual mix of treatments caused neurotoxins in the blood.
What’s your favourite Grey’s Anatomy case? Is there an insane one that really stuck out to you? Grey’s Anatomy is rumoured to be returning to our screens later this year, are you ready? That’s all from me – I’m off to rewatch Grey’s from the start!
